Although Snakes and Ladders first appeared in 19th century England, it is based on a much older game from India, known as Moksha-Patumu. In its original form, it’s Hindu roots were explicit, with ladders ascending from squares such as Faith and Knowledge, and snakes descending from Lying, Drunkeness and Greed. The game was, in short a parable of karma, with the characteristic vices and virtues of humanity being respectively punished and rewarded. It is perhaps significant that there were more snakes than ladders.
The instructive moral tone of the game clearly impressed the Victorians and the game was brought to England as a suitable entertainment for children. Inevitably, the relocation to the Christian perspective made for some variations - changes were made to the values expressed - Asceticism, for example was lost, whilst Grace made an appearance - and the number of snakes and ladders were equalised. In its modern form, the game has shed its religious and moral content and is generally played simply as a game of advantage and penalty.
